How Do I Get a Rental Car?

If I’m in a Car accident How Do I Get a Rental Car?

Insurance after an accident

While your car is being repaired you should be able to get a rental car at the expense of the insurance company that insured the at fault driver.  The insurance company will normally authorize a rental for a certain period of time, and any extension must be authorized by the adjuster.  If you need to get an extension, get the approval from the adjuster prior to the time the rental expires.  Usually you can keep the rental until your car is repaired.

If you obtain a rental car without prior authorization, the insurance company might not agree to pay for it.  Usually the rental car companies will require a down payment of approximately $50.00 to be put on your credit card prior to renting the vehicle even though the insurance company is paying for the rental.  You will get that money back when the insurance company pays the bill.

If you are involved in an accident with an uninsured driver, your insurance company will only pay for a rental car if you carry rental car coverage on your policy.  If you do not carry rental car coverage, then your insurance company does not have to pay for a rental car.
